Latino/a Representations

Week 7

“A major factor in the attitude of Whites toward Mexico and its people was the negativism toward Mexican ethnicity. Most of the population was either full-blooded native (Indian) or mestizo (mixture of Spanish ancestry and Indian). Anglo American writers routinely referred with disdain to Mexicans as “these mixed races””(Wilson, Gutierrez, Chao p. 60). #Mexican independence #white supremacy #racism #Mack

I selected this picture to show how signs prohibiting Spanish or Mexican people were also present in the United States, not just signs for black people. The 19th century is when animosity towards Latinos truly started and white people began to group them all as one.
