Fight Like A Girl

“While Asian women have also historically been depicted as dragon ladies, domestic workers, gang molls, and hookers or in subservient, overexoticized images, more contemporary roles for Asian women have launched a new genre that typecasts them as ‘women warriors’…. As film critic Leonard Maltin says, images of strong women in the more organic or cerebral sense of the word do no sell tickets; what young women in audiences today want to see are women kicking butt on screen.” – Racism, Sexism, and the Media (Wilson II, Gutiérrez, Chao, 2013, page 100)

I’d say the shift from women playing the house keeper, wife, or some other supporting role is truly a runaway success these days. We’ve got numerous examples around us like Mulan, Brave, Frozen, and The Hunger Games which turned out to be box office hits which prove that the world is ready, and has been ready, for women kicking ass and taking names and that they’re more than something pretty to gawk at.
