Week 3: Race and Gender in ‘News’ Media: Reflection and Reinforcement

“Sex crime media coverage continues to be both genderized and racialized: The rape of a White woman by a Black man is the most commonly covered type of rape, while the rape of a Black woman and Black man is the least commonly covered. This practice not only is statistically inaccurate- most rapes are committed by men of the same race and class of the victim- but also reflects and perpetuates the notion that White women are more valued and valuable than Black Women. (Wilson II, Gutierrez, Chao. Racism, Sexism, and the Media. p 146.)
